81. SHADOWS OF WINTER

Donald Hazen Brown Archive By Don Brown

1990 ROCKLAND LAKE, NY. Every year, toward the end of autumn, the rowboats at Rockland Lake were hauled out of the water and piled, one on top of another for the winter months. It as a sure sign that summer and autumn were gone. I was intrigued by the design of the shadows on the boats stored on the shore of the lake. The rest of the picture was quite secondary. My primary purpose was just to paint the rich, deep, dark patterns of the shadows on the rowboats. As winter nears every year darkness comes earlier. The days become shorter. The earth turns away from the sun, and shadows grow longer and deeper. Shadows and darkness, however, have their own beauty. They bring new ways of seeing to us---as the shadows on the boats help us see the contours and shapes of boats in new and interesting ways. The shadows in our lives can likewise assist us in seeing other dimensions within ourselves that might otherwise be overlooked.
