70. Convent Archways

Donald Hazen Brown Archive By Don Brown

2004 MENDHAM, NJ. For more than 30 years, I have attended Retreats at St. John Baptist in Mendham, N. J. This painting is a portion of the Convent House located at the Retreat Center. The repetition of the convent's archways, the small windows above them and the rows of dorm windows along the roof, made for an interesting composition. To further the repetitious pattern of the painting, I emphasized the lines left by a recent mowing of the lawn. The tree, with its gnarled twisted trunk and branches, is a welcomed contrast from the repetitious horizontal and vertical aspects of the painting. Repetition, in a painting, or in life itself, need not be without interest.
