48. HORIZON WATCH SHEFFIELD LIGHTHOUSE

Donald Hazen Brown Archive By Don Brown

1995 SHEFFILED, CT. The ferry left Norwalk Harbor on a July overcast morning, limiting visibility to perhaps a half-mile or so. As we approached the island upon which the lighthouse was located the sky brightened somewhat and by the time we had disembarked and climbed the hill to the lighthouse all threats of rain vanished and the sun soon began to flood the scene, lifting the mist from the ocean and revealing the distant horizon of the long Island Sound. What attracted me to this scene was the manner in which the lighthouse stood, sentinel like, facing the distant horizon. Day after day it is there, constantly scanning the horizon, and at night sending it beam out across the water, piercing the darkness, pushing its lights far toward. the horizon as possible. Like the lighthouse we, too, are focused on the horizons of our lives--constantly searching for what the future may hold for us. We are forever scanning the horizon looking for any harbingers of the future, wondering what the unknown, which we cannot yet see, has in store for us. By painting the lighthouse from the rear and causing the viewer to also face the horizon, I hoped through the painting to capture the watchful orientation of the lighthouse (and us) on the future.
