78. Swartswood Barns

Donald Hazen Brown Archive By Don Brown

2003 SWARTSWOOD, NJ. I had arrived early for a conference near Swartswood, N.J. Using the extra time, I drove through the countryside and came upon this configuration of barns. Taken by the scene, I pulled my car off the road and parked. Although I did not have all my painting equipment on hand, I had enough to make a detailed watercolor sketch of the fields and barns. Later I completed a fuller rendition of the painting. Red barns are an icon of rural America. Being a creature of a suburban, metropolitan area, the barns were not a familiar subject that I painted. Nevertheless for me they evoked feelings of nostalgia for a bygone era. As farms continue to disappear in rural New Jersey, this painting was a way for me to hold on to a past I had never experienced for myself.
