12B. Island Trees

Donald Hazen Brown Archive By Don Brown

2011 RINGWOOD MANOR, NJ. Situated on an island in Sally's Pond in Ringwood Manor State Park, N.J., I has painted these evergreen trees several times: twice from one side of the pond and another from the other side. In more than one instance, a goose climbed ashore and chased me away. I had inadvertently invaded her territory. Although the island was small, the half dozen trees found enough soil to plant themselves among the rocks and shrubs. I iis fascinated by the way they consumed the island. It was now their habitat. Whether sun, wind, or rain, they were there to stay. I wanted the painting to show the commanding presence of the trees on the island. Like these trees on the island, being in command is natural for some and sought by others. But, as some of the trees, battered, weathered and bent suggest, there is a price to pay for those who want to be a leader.
