Painted Dunes at Dusk

USA/Lassen National Park By Derrick Kelly

In the Spring of 1851 two gold prospectors reported an erupting volcano in the Lassen area. Several other witnesses made similar claims and stories were printed in newspapers recounting the eruption. Centuries later, Scientist have disproved this theory and placed the date of the eruption sometime in the latter half of the 1600's. No matter the controversy, this place was and is a uniquely beautiful landscape. The views atop the Cinder cone are astounding, especially towards the painted dunes, where the ash from the eruption fell on the hot lava flows and oxidized into the beautiful hues of red and rust
