Dome of the Clocks, Minaret of Jesus, Damascus

This watercolor study focuses on one of the least-viewed aspects of the Great Umayyad Mosque in Damascus, Syria — the southeast corner. The Minaret of ‘Issa (Jesus) is the highest of the three minarets of the mosque and Muslim tradition holds that it is here that Christ will come down before the Day of Judgement to fight the Anti-Christ. The domed structure in the foreground is the Ottoman-era Dome of the Clocks, so called because it used to house the mosque’s clock collection. It rests on eight recycled Roman columns. The eastern facade, left, with its two-tiered colonnade of arches, is a major point of pilgrimage for Shi’a Muslims. Some narrow Roman-era rooms behind the eastern wall are where the Umayyad Caliph Yezid reportedly brought the head of Hussein ibn ‘Ali, the grandson of the prophet Muhammad, whom he defeated and decapitated at the battle of Kerbala in 680 AD. This spot, the Mashhad Hussein, is a major point of pilgrimage for Shi’a, from Iran and elsewhere.
