This is a watercolor I did while working out the concept for a recent painting of Old Jaffa. This more abstract approach was the road not taken, because at the time I was focused on reconstructing late 19th-century Jaffa scene with as much historical accuracy as possible. But the more I looked at this piece though, the more I liked it. The focus here is not on structural detail or historical accuracy but rather on conveying the look, color, and feel of a crowded market. I spent more than four decades working in and around the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia, so I have seen many a marketplace. The idea for the painting germinated from a review of late 19th-century scenes in my collection of vintage Middle East stereocards.
