Water Carrier and Donkey, Old Kuwait

Middle East and N. Africa By David D. Pearce

This watercolor was inspired by a small black and white photo in The Arab of the Desert, by H.R. P. Dickson. I was intrigued by it, not only because I served in Kuwait 1988-1991, but also because the grainy little picture illustrated aspects of Old Kuwait that are now gone forever. The foreground figure is a water seller and his donkey, laden with a black goatskin. Dhows used to sail east to the Shatt Al-Arab, load up with sweet water, and return to Kuwait harbor where water sellers like this waited to distribute the precious commodity. The scene also shows traditional architectural elements, including high walls, water spouts that drained flat roofs, and wind towers used to catch and divert breezes to cool interior living spaces in the days before air conditioning. Here too, down the street on the right, can be seen a small mosque with its stubby, square minaret and, left, women carrying water jugs on their heads.
