Front Door, Villa Montfeld, Algiers

Middle East and N. Africa By David D. Pearce

I served as U.S. Ambassador to Algeria 2008-2011. While there, it was my privilege to live in the Villa Montfeld, a historic U.S. government property that serves as the official Chief of Mission residence. This is the massive wooden front door of the residence, itself a masterpiece of old tiles, columns and pointed arches. The front door opens onto a lovely porticoed courtyard with flowers and a fountain. I passed its way many times, but one day I sat down with my sketchbook and paint box. I wanted a souvenir, however imperfect, of its bulk and beauty. And it was a time of day when the incomparable Mediterranean light drew the shadows of portico arches on the pavement. This is one of my earliest watercolors, just a sketch, but it brings back many memories of a beautiful place in a beautiful land that all too few Americans get to know.
