This painting is about what it feels like to be on the river as the sun rises. All is still and bright, colors are phantom, shadows lie deep. I had been looking for the right setting for a backlit reference photo I had of a friend fishing. I remember this friend’s patience and zeal to find the right spot. I also recall he had a terrible cold that morning, and I was very impressed by his determination to get out on the river despite being so under the weather.
