In the River (drawing)

Fly Fishing By David D. Pearce

One early May morning in Rangeley, Maine, a friend and I came upon this extraordinary scene. A solitary fly fisherman stood on a flat rock in the river, fishing what appeared to be a fairly productive pool in the shadows opposite. The woods and adjacent waters where the fish lay were dark and deep. The morning sun broke through on a slant from the tree tops and highlighted the enormous rocks in the foreground as well as about half of the fly fisherman's figure. I wanted to capture the scene and its contrasts, so I quickly got out my camera and squeezed off a shot. Thanks to the current stay-at-home rules, I finally got back to it. This drawing is graphite and white charcoal on toned gray paper.
