Imagination and Memory By David D. Pearce

This is a small watercolor study I did on Memorial Day, 2020. It portrays the field in Virginia where my great great grandfather Addison Cook died on October 19, 1864 at the Civil War Battle of Cedar Creek. He was part of Battery D, 1st PA Light Artillery, defending the left flank of the Union line. Confederate forces emerged out of a heavy dawn fog and overwhelmed his position. He and six others in his battery died defending their pieces in hand-to-hand combat, bayoneted and struck down with clubbed muskets. This picture is painted from the top of the hill where that Union line was. The Confederate forces crossed Cedar Creek at Bowman's Mill Ford, just beyond the buildings and near treeline on the right, and from this area formed up and attacked the Union troops.
