Ram Island Light

Maine By David D. Pearce

This lighthouse is on Ram Island, off Boothbay Harbor, one of my favorite places in Maine. I was going by in a boat, and was struck by how the light glinted off the water and silhouetted the pier and lighthouse. I saw this sailboat coming, and squeezed off some pictures as it passed. Looking at the backlit photos later, the light and color reminded me of Winslow Homer's 1887 painting "Bringing in the Nets", from the Payson Collection of Homer's work at the Portland Museum of Art. I used pen and ink for outlines of pier, yacht, and lighthouse, and watercolor for the rest of the scene.
