This Single Life

Ireland Paintings By Dawn Richerson

Almost every month during the two years I lived in Ireland and whenever weather would allow, I would hike to the top of Carrowkeel, situated on the border of County Roscommon and County Sligo. At the top of the winding trails, one arrives at an overlook. Gazing out over Lough Key and Lough Arrow in the direction of Knocknarae, Ben Bulben and Sligo Bay, I was always struck by how the landscape came to life with the forms of ancient animals and the epic stories of the ones who walked once upon these lands. There is a lone tree there, at the top of the slope. Twisted by time, it appears both strong and fragile. I came to see this tree as a symbol of celebrating this single life and the essential stories we, as individuals, bring to our singular role in place and time. We live lives fraught with peril, no matter our particular station in life. Yet, this tree spoke as the wind shook its shimmering leaves, always reminded me that our life here on Earth is a journey worth making: "to climb every mountain, to ford every stream" in the words from "The Sound of Music." Here in the heart of the Emerald Isle, I followed every rainbow until I found my dream. I will never let it go. What is your essential story of life? What is alive in you?
