Something about the stars that night she wore the yellow dress... The music swept her into reverie and she did not mind the heat of the August night. On the island of Hispaniola she awaited his arrival. It had been too long since the sailor had come their way, and while they met in dreams it was not the same. She sometimes did not know herself without him, as if her face was comprised of shadow and the memory of the moment with him by the sea, as if her limbs no longer belonged to her body, as if her heart were outside of her chest. This Spirited Life painting is by Virginia artist Dawn Richerson.
