In the small red boat, she stands, barely visible against the deep, tumultuous seas and nearly swallowed by the roar of an angry ocean. The world has turned upside down and inside out. She no longer knows whether her heart is steering her toward heaven’s shore in the distant, greying skies or onto the flying sands of an unfamiliar land. Tossed upon the angry wave, she hears the echo of his promise from beyond: “I will hold you in this storm.” Wherever the waves will spit her out, no matter if all be torn to bits, she rests in the clear knowing that she is headed home, to a new world where she will stand strong in the truth and grace of all she knows by heart. This painting is inspired by my visit to Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer in Provence, France, in 2016 and all that has come clear in time. During my time there, the soul of France reawakened me and connected me more deeply to my soul’s story and memories from a life long ago.
