This acrylic painting captures the sailboat Coaster as it leans into the strong winds of Deception Pass – a dramatic strait that separates Whidbey Island from Fidalgo Island in the northwest corner of Washington State. It connects Skagit Bay to the Strait of Juan de Fuca, forming a narrow, turbulent waterway renowned for its swift tidal currents, swirling whirlpools, and breathtaking scenery. The name “Deception” was coined by British explorer George Vancouver in 1792, who was misled into thinking Whidbey Island was a peninsula. Towering above the strait is the Deception Pass Bridge, built in 1935. Rising 180 feet above the water, the bridge offers panoramic views of rugged cliffs, forested islands, and the churning sea below. Onshore a rowboat named Deception Pass rests beside large driftwood logs. The paintings backdrop is NOAA Nautical Chart 18421- Strait of Juan de Fuca to Strait of Georgia: Drayton Harbor – featuring Whidbey island, Fidalgo island and surrounding San Juan islands. The artist painted directly onto the chart, her signature technique.
