Kalayaan (freedom/independence), Mauna Kea, Hawaʻi

Baybayin Block Prints By Chris T. Lipat

Kalayaan ᜃᜎᜌᜀ, written in traditional Baybayin, a pre-colonial Philippine script, is Tagalog for freedom or independence (wayawaya in Ilokano, kūʻokoʻa in ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi). Various batek (traditional tattoo) symbols for bird, rain, water, stars, and protection are depicted. The essence of ʻōhiʻa-lehua encourages all to turn to our ancestry as a foundation for new growth, even after seemingly destructive forces. The essence of macadamia brings forgiveness, builds peace within, and helps one overcome feeling small against massive consequences. This image symbolizes a Pin@yʻs spiritual connection to Hawaiʻi, and how we are inspired to embrace our ancestral ways of knowing, to support the Kānaka Maoli-led movement to protect Mauna Kea as our indigenous people strive to protect and preserve our own homelands, and to build a sustainable future together based on the values of aloha ʻāina. Mauna Kea in Hawaiʻi Island is depicted. This is an image of a 2020 block print by Chris Lipat. 50% of artist profits will be donated to the Maui Filipino Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Scholarship Program.
