Isip (Mind), Koholepelepe, HI

Baybayin Block Prints By Chris T. Lipat

Isip ᜁᜐᜒ, written in Baybayin, a pre-colonial Philippine script, is Tagalog for "mind." Filipino batek (traditional tattoo) symbols include the bituin (star) in the night sky, isda/iʻa (fish) and ulan/ua (rain), and features Koholepelepe (Koko Head Crater in Oʻahu). Kohelepelepe is known in Hawaiian mo’olelo (legend) as the imprint of the Hawaiian goddess Pele’s sister Kapo’s pekpek, which eventually lands in Kalihi Valley. This image was originally created as a block print in 2017 by Chris Lipat. 50% of artist profits will be donated to the Maui Filipino Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Scholarship Program.
