Kaluluwa (spirit/soul)

Baybayin Block Prints By Chris T. Lipat

Kaluluwa ᜃᜎᜓᜎᜓᜏ written in Baybayin, a pre-colonial Philippine script, is Tagalog for spirit, soul or vital principle (karurua in Ilokano, ʻuhane in ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi). Living in Honolulu, I felt a calling to dig deeply into my own roots as a person that recognizes the occupied, independent nation of Hawaiʻi. Kaluluwa captures the soul searching that Filipinxs are challenged to embrace living on the islands. Witnessing the Kānaka Maoli practice and teach aloha ʻāina, and seeing how the land and its people are intertwined, continues to inspire me to connect to my own ancestral ways of knowing. This image was originally created in 2013 on lino block print by Chris Lipat. 50% of artistʻs profits will go towards the Maui Filipino Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Scholarship Program.
