Mongolian Ponies

Horses By Barry & Cathy Beck

While fly fishing for taimen on the Ur and Eg Rivers in Mongolia, this herd of horses came to the river to drink. It was an early fall morning, there was frost on the ground, the leaves were turning and the mist coming off the river with the horses all in a line on the other side made a lasting image in our minds and through our viewfinder. The Mongolian horse is perhaps the oldest true breed of horse, their bloodlines are ancient and have had a major influence on many breeds throughout Asia and Europe. Mongolians have always been known for their horsemanship. The varied Mongolian terrain; forest, steppe, mountain and desert, has shaped the breed. As a nomadic people, horses play a major role in the lives of the Mongolians.
