Lipizzaner Eye The world-famous Lipizzaner gets it name from the village of Lipica in modern Slovenia, where the famous Lipica Stud Farm was founded with Spanish horse stock in 1580. The farm continues to breed, train, and show dressage and carriage horses. Lipizzaners have been bred from Spanish, Italian, German and Danish studs since the early 1700s. We happened onto the farm while fly fishing in Slovenia and found the horses and their history fascinating. Lipizzaners are born black, brown or mousy grey. Their coat changes every time they moult. It is only between ages seven and ten that the horses finally display the beautiful white coat for which they are famous. This particular horse appeared to be intensely studying us as we made our way through the stables. What was he thinking? Probably that we know very little about horses – and he would be correct!
