We found this little house by Lago Tres Valles (Three Valles Lake), early one morning in southern Argentina while on a fly fishing trip. It looked like the perfect place to escape to – tucked up against the Andes, no phone, no internet, no modern conveniences. The owners of the property told us that it is a gaucho (cowboy) house and is not used anymore. In years past, gauchos would stay “out” for long periods of time checking fences, tending to herds of cattle, sheep, or horses. It was a lonely existence with only their horse and dogs to keep them company. Little by little gauchos are being replaced with all terrain vehicles, 4-wheel drive trucks, and fancy surveillance. But when the cattle need to be rounded up or a new fence row established, the ranchers still call the gauchos and they do what needs to be done. They live closer to the ranch headquarters today, but still provide a very important service to the estancia, or ranch.
