Black Maned African Lion

African Safari By Barry & Cathy Beck

A black mane on a male lion indicates that the lion is healthy, eats well, and has a high level of testosterone. Male lions start to grow manes around the age of two years, which signals the onset of sexual maturity. We have been fortunate to see a number of black maned lions on our East Africa Safaris.
