The lion is the only truly social member of the cat family. Prides usually consist of related females and their offspring. Male cubs are driven out of the pride when they approach maturity, but females cubs stay on for a second or third generation. All mothers help raise the young litters. Prides are usually lorded over by two or three adult males, quite often brothers. The spotted hyena is their main rival and terrific battles often ensue over kills with the hyena trying to steal from the lions. Sepia adds a softness to the photo and gives the appearance that it might gave come from the Hemingway era.
