The giraffe is the tallest member of the animal kingdom, with adults averaging around 5 meters tall. Males can be told from females by the bald tops to their horns. Giraffe have an unusual social system in which females live apart from males in home ranges of about ten square miles. The males can be solitary nut will congregate in bachelor herds. A single calf is born and although mothers put up a good defense against predators such as lion and spotted hyena, less than a quarter of young survive the first year. Giraffe can be spotted from great distances in safari vehicles when traveling across African plains.
