Variation On McCahons Cubistism New Zealand Colonial 'Modernism' came late in acceptance by the general run of New Zealand society its imaginary Dutch rigour (Named after Zeeland of Dutch Polder fame) mostly rejected the first generation of actual period specific such as Frances Hodgkin's until it had been 'averaged out' and 'smoothed over' to be acceptable to Kiwi tastes within a general population sufficiently large to support advanced art. So New Zealands home art market accepts this latter, smoother silky, all-the-awkward charm of the originals rough hewn grit and knobs knocked off and therefore acceptable to the middle range economic conditions. Hence mainly the cleaned up and regularized second comers are seen as innovators and also pioneers. It is this secondary 'cubism' I tackle here: playing with its prettied whimsies. a sort of post-modernist exploration. Creating a small 'world' of cubiste tinge as if manufactured by and repeated into the cultural domestic vision of McCahons motifs in the grammars of creation.
