Going on a hike at night can lead you to places that seem in-between dreams and reality. Scenes you pass every day can look completely new if you see them by moonlight. I took a lot of midnight hikes at college. Mount Vernon, Iowa was a very small town, so I felt safe walking at night by myself. The town is beautiful during the day; most of it is on the national historical registry, and many of the buildings are old Victorian style. The setting was lovely during the day, but it turned into something out of a novel at night. Shadows, mist and silence added a layer of mystery to everything around. I would daydream as I walked, imagining myself a part of whatever book I was reading at the time. There were times I almost felt as though I had walked out of one world into another.
