Cant Take This to the Bank

Objects By Margaret R. Isensee

I love color! However, there are times that color gets in the way of a good photo. For example, look at this photo closely for at least 30 seconds or more. Now try to imagine what it would be like in color. (Okay, some may say, “I didn’t take the photo, so how could I imagine the colors?” WELL, just try it!) Sometimes color is a big distraction away from some of the other elements in the photo. For example, look at the highlights and shadows. Light can be emphasized more in a black and white photo. It seems as if in some black and white photos the light and shadow’s voices are magnified. It doesn’t just whisper “Look at me,” it screams “YOU CAN’T MISS ME NOW!” Also, notice the texture. It’s easier to notice now that color can’t trip up our eyes. Black and white can emphasize patterns and shapes in the photo. And besides, in a world full of color photos, a black and white photo may stand out just like a neon light that catches the viewer’s eye.
