Evangeline and Gabriel Betrothal Feast

Jane E. Benham Art Collection By Lawrence Martin Capuder

This illustration is from page 27 of the book of Henry Longfellow’s epic poem "Evangeline A Tale of Acadie" (London, Bogue, 1850), the first known illustrated version. Jane Eleanor Benham Hay (1829 –1904) was a British painter and illustrator, a virtual pioneer of Victorian female artists. British publisher Henry Richard Vizetelly(1820 – 1894) was the book’s engraver. The image was scanned from an original first edition copy of the book. Part the First, Canto IV. “For Evangeline stood among the guests of her father; Bright was her face with smiles, and words of welcome and gladness Fell from her beautiful lips, and blessed the cup as she gave it.” Evangeline and Gabriel, fresh from their betrothment ceremony with Notary René Leblanc, Father Felician and their families, come to celebrate with the people of Grand Pré. Gabriel holds the pitcher as Evangeline graciously shares the liquid refreshments - considering the Era and the occasion, most likely, draught beer - with their guests.
