Piebald Doe in the Snow

The White Deer By Michael Bateman

There are two White-tailed deer depicted here. In the foreground is a piebald doe grooming herself and in the background another in the herd passing through this hillside in Kinnelon, New Jersey. The Piebald coloration is caused by a genetic condition known as Leucism which causes some, but not all, pigmentation in the skin and fur is missing, leaving large patches of white and making her a little hard to find in the snow!
