Provence is a land of contrasts – craggy hills and angular stone building softened by lush vegetation and sunlight. Built atop the foothills of the Hills of Vaucluse near Avignon, Gordes is one of the most beautiful hilltop villages in France. Its houses and buildings of white stone root themselves into the sharp cliff of the mountain like barnacles, its labyrinth of narrow cobblestone streets making the whole appear as a single living creature.
