Texas Jack

Nature By Bill Cryer

The iconic Texas Jackrabbit (Lepus californicus). Found throghout most of Texas and west to the pacific Ocean, can outrun most of its predators with a broken-field speed of up to 35 mph, which would make him a standout NFL running back. It got its name (according to Texas Parks and Wildlife) from its lopey "jackass" sized ears. It should more properly be called "Texas Jack-Hare," since it's not really a rabbit. I selected this image from a photograph because of its eyes: always on the alert for a passing coyote, hawk or bobcat.
