This composition is simple and sparse. It is meant to show one of the stages of acceptance of the inevitability of surrender and death. The feeling of isolation and hopelessness that comes when the physical body sends the message to the brain that resistance is fading to the point of no return and that death is winning out over the natural forces of life. Jesus is not giving up and is being helped. But the sparse number of helpers lends to this feeling of helplessness and isolation. Jesus is most probably entering another level of consciousness where he is relying more on the strength of His Father than on His own physical ability to carry on. But His will is strong, as is depicted by His right hand on His Cross. He appears not, in any meaningful way, to be supporting the Cross, but struggling not to let go of it! He and The Cross have become one! He is doing the Will of His Father. He will complete what it is that He has been sent to accomplish. NOTE—These original Stations of the Cross were painted for a Catholic church in Puerto Rico.
